ArtIstanbul Feshane

The artistic renaissance of Feshane

The new address of my Istanbul tour is Artİstanbul Feshane. It is located on the shores of the Golden Horn, the city’s natural harbor. Visiting this place is like feeling the renaissance that Istanbul is experiencing…

In the past, Feshane buildings represented the power of the empire and its desire for change. As I approach the place, I notice the magnificent inscription and tughra at the entrance of the 200-year-old building. It is clear that this place has become stronger through the changes it has undergone.

Multi-Purpose Event Venue

Previously known as Feshane-i-Amire, it was built 190 years ago on the southern shore of the Golden Horn. The steam weaving machines brought from England, France, and Belgium were used to produce fezzes, fabrics for upholstery, military boots, buttons, carpets, prayer rugs, and kilims.

Over the years, the Feshane, which had been affected by fires and natural disasters, was strengthened with a special steel construction developed in Belgium after the second half of the 19th century to deal with outdoor weather conditions. After the introduction of the law on wearing hats, fez production was discontinued and in 1937 Feshane was transferred to Sümerbank under the name of the Defterdar Factory. In 2019, a process of restoration began.

From the past to today…

Over the years, Feshane has also served as an important stop in the transition from traditional production based on small handicrafts to the weaving industry. Today, it continues its life as a multi-functional space that hosts national and international projects. With its exhibition halls, library, social spaces, workshops, and reading areas, it responds to the needs of the people of Istanbul.

When I visit, I am impressed by the exquisite sculptures in the open area overlooking the Golden Horn, and I better understand why this is the largest cultural and artistic venue in Istanbul. The area where the steam weaving machines used to be brought from abroad is now an art center where the works of local and foreign artists are exhibited.

I feel the historical process of the place as I walk through it. The woodwork on the walls and the landscaping reflect the historic atmosphere of Feshane very well. With its new face, it has an attitude that resists the tiredness of the years.

Walking through the exhibition spaces, I cannot get enough of the combination of traditional Turkish art and contemporary compositions. One of the highlights of the venue is the inclusion of interactive exhibitions and multimedia installations that provide visitors with immersive and engaging experiences. These additions make Artİstanbul attractive to a young audience like myself. Apart from the exhibitions, it is also possible to spend time in the restaurant, shops, and green areas.

The Tate selection

One of the things that excited me the most about this place was the collection of the world-famous Tate Museum. It was exhibited here. The exhibition ‘Dynamic Eye: Beyond Optical and Kinetic Art’ featured 57 artists and 95 works from 21 countries for four months.

Feshane’s renaissance under the careful restoration of the Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality is a testament to the city’s commitment to preserving its cultural identity while embracing its future. The combination of historic charm with modern functionality and the cultural events that take place there make Feshane a must for anyone wishing to discover the artistic spirit of Istanbul.
