Moda Pier

The ferry rides and seaside moments contribute to the distinctive charm of life in Istanbul. For an enhanced experience by the sea, the restored Moda Pier stands out as an ideal spot in the city.

I had eagerly awaited the completion of İBB Kültür’s restoration work on the Historical Moda Pier, and upon its reopening, I wasted no time in visiting. Over a brief period, it has become one of my go-to places whenever I’m in the city. The atmosphere and breath-taking views continue to captivate me each time I step foot there.

Memory of the Bosphorus

Designed by architect Vedat Tek in 1917 and inaugurated in 1919, Moda Pier stands as one of the city’s oldest piers. However, its fate took a turn in 1937 when a powerful southwest wind caused significant damage, leading to its closure for an extended period. Although it reopened in 1964, a decline in passenger numbers due to evolving transport conditions posed a threat, and the pier struggled to operate until 1986.

Originally intended as a pier, Moda Pier underwent various transformations over the years, serving as the British Yacht Club, a waterside casino, and a restaurant before its closure in 2015. Since 2016, the pier has awaited a revival, and in 2022, it is set to regain its vibrancy after undergoing restoration. With a storied past, the pier will once again come to life, resilient and more robust than ever.

More Than Just a Pier

The Moda Pier is now used as a pier, a book café and a library, and its opening is eagerly awaited not only by the people of Kadıköy but also by all Istanbulites. During the restoration of this place, like other historical buildings in Istanbul, it was considered as a living space. It functions not only as a pier but also as a social area. There is also a library with 9,000 books, outdoor study areas and a beautiful terrace. While workshops and book talks can be held on the upper floor, the ground floor can be used for cafes, acoustic concerts and other daily gatherings.

Exquisite Details and Views of Istanbul

With its neoclassical architecture, Moda Pier is also one of Istanbul’s most iconic buildings. It’s easy to see that the restoration was carried out with great care, preserving the original details. The beauty of the designs reflected on the four sides of the building and the elegant tiles that decorate the windows are examples of this. All the details still have a fascinating impact.

The standout feature of this location is undoubtedly its breathtaking view. The expansive sea unfolds before you, creating a sense of tranquility that provides a welcome escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. It serves as an ideal spot to take a break and unwind. The sunsets, in particular, are a spectacle to behold, akin to witnessing a living painting every evening, adding to the overall charm and serenity of the place.

The Moda Pier is not only a historical landmark; it continues its life by transforming itself into a lively and beautiful place that attracts everyone. To experience this liveliness, you must visit Moda Pier.
